The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion features numerous complex quests that test a player's choices and magical abilities. Among these, the quest titled Fingers of the Mountain Part 2 offers adventurers a chance to harness a devastating destruction spell. Understanding the necessary steps and preparation ensures you can complete this task without falling victim to its dangerous magical backlash.
Starting the Quest and Gathering Requirements
To begin this follow-up quest, players must first navigate the initial conflict between Earana and Teekeeus in Chorrol. If you handed the ancient book over to Earana or stole it back for her, she will provide translated notes after a short waiting period. Reading her notes reveals that unlocking the ancient spell requires traveling back to Cloud Top with a specific magical catalyst.
Before heading to the mountain summit, you must acquire a Welkynd Stone to act as an energy conduit. These blue glowing stones are commonly found throughout various Ayleid ruins scattered across Cyrodiil. Ensure you also have a basic shock spell learned and ready to cast before reaching the location.
Performing the Ritual at Cloud Top
Once properly equipped, make your way back to the ruined altar at Cloud Top located northwest of Chorrol. Approach the large broken stone pillar while keeping the Welkynd Stone safely in your character's inventory. You do not need to consume or manually drop the stone during this procedure.
Target the central pillar and cast your shock spell directly at the stone structure. Upon impact, a massive bolt of lightning will strike down onto your character as part of the magical reaction. If your character survives this intense electrical damage, the powerful Finger of the Mountain spell will be permanently added to your spellbook.
Surviving the Lightning Backlash
The lightning strike triggered by the ritual delivers substantial shock damage that scales directly with your character level. Unprepared adventurers with low health pools or poor elemental resistances can easily be slain in a single hit. Preparing beforehand with shock resistance potions, enchanted gear, or protective magic is strongly recommended.
Alternatively, agile players can attempt to dodge the incoming lightning bolt by casting a targeted ranged shock spell from a distance and immediately moving away. Taking these precautions guarantees a smooth completion of the ritual without unnecessary deaths or save reloads.
Resolving Quest Log Updates and Rewards
After acquiring the spell, the quest objectives will officially update to reflect your success at Cloud Top. Players who previously gave the book to Earana can also choose to steal it back from her room at The Grey Mare inn. Returning the stolen text to Teekeeus at the Mages Guild allows you to secure his official guild recommendation if you haven't already.
The reward spell itself features scaling magicka costs and damage output based on when you finish the task. Completing this quest early in your playthrough provides a very useful area-of-effect destruction ability for early combat encounters. Managing your interactions with both NPCs guarantees you maximize both magical power and guild standing.
